We at CardsThatGive.org believe that buyers should have a level of assurance that their donation (in the form of their card purchase) will be used efficiently and effectively to help further the charity’s purposes. Therefore, in order to be included in the CardsThatGive.org site, a U.S. charity must meet several criteria.

First, we ascertain that the charity is a 501(c)3 organization. This means that the U.S. government has determined that the nonprofit meets the criteria for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code. (Non-profit organizations based in Canada must be registered as a charity with the Canada Revenue Agency to be included.)

Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy

Second, we determine whether Charity Navigator, an independent nonprofit charity evaluator, has examined the charity. Charity Navigator summarizes its mission as “work[ing] to advance a more efficient and responsive philanthropic marketplace by evaluating the financial health of America's largest charities.”

Charity Navigator has reviewed over 5,000 charities, rating them using a star system. Charities receiving fewer than two stars are not included in the CardsThatGive.org site. For more information about Charity Navigator’s analysis, please visit the Charity Navigator website.

In reviewing non-profit organizations for possible inclusion in CardsThatGive.org, we also consider issues such as the ease of use of their on-line ordering procedures, the percentage of the card price that the charity receives, whether clear images of the cards are available, and the visual appeal of the cards themselves.

Those who wish to know more about any of the charities included in CardsThatGive.org should consult other on-line information sources such as Guidestar, as well as the charities themselves.
